’Puff’ and pass: 5 frugal recipes using puff pastry

If you have this ingredient in your freezer, you're already halfway to making delicious snacks as it works with just about any filling.

PUFF pastry seems to be a lifesaver these days as this versatile freezer goodie can have you whipping up delicious snacks in no time. And let’s be honest, pastry is delicious, so no matter what toppings you put on it, it’s going to be a hit.

With puff pastry, there’s no need to complicate things unless you want to.

Here are five recipes that will have rumbling tummies satisfied in no time. All snacks must be egg-washed before popping into the oven or air fryer at 180 °C until golden brown.

Vienna pastry puff
The name of this dish says it all – Viennas rolled inside pastry. Before placing the Vienna into the pastry and rolling it, you can also add a sauce of your choice, or cheese, or both – the choice is yours. Cut the pastry to size to cover the Vienna and bake.

Upside-down fruit tart
Using your choice of fruit, cut them into slices and place them on a baking sheet. Add sugar, cinnamon, honey – whatever tickles your fancy. Then place pastry sheets cut into squares over the fruit and bake. Flip them over when you serve. Serve with a dollop of cream or ice cream or simply dig in and enjoy on their own.

Cheesy garlic and herb pinwheels
Roll out a sheet of pastry and spread garlic butter and mixed herbs all over it. Top with grated parmesan or any cheese of your choice. Roll into a log and cut into pieces to resemble a pinwheel. Top with more cheese before baking.

Mini pies
Get inventive and use leftover curry or cook up some chicken fillet, savoury mince, mushroom and cheese – whatever your palate fancies. Place filling onto one sheet of pastry and cover with another. Press the sides down with a fork and make holes on top before baking.

Puff-pastry pizza
Place salami rounds on a baking sheet and top with cheese and pizza sauce – any sauce will work really. Place a sheet of rectangular-shaped puff pastry over the filling and press down with a fork. Bake and flip them over when you serve.
