Armed robbery: a developing Melville crime trend?

BRIXTON – Brixton SAPS could not comment if the recent crime incidents in Melville were a developing trend.

The recent incidents of armed robberies at shopping centres in Melville is cause for concern.

First, a shop owner was shot during an armed robbery at his jewellery store at Campus Square on 5 August.

Then, shop owners were held at gunpoint during an attempted robbery at 27Boxes on 7 August.

Brixton Police Station Commander Colonel Michelle Jones was asked if she suspected any syndicate was connected to those incidents. “Cannot say at this stage,” she responded in an email.

When asked if she thought that robbers were targeting malls in the Joburg area, due to these incidents, Col Jones said, “I cannot comment on this as I don’t know what suspects think.”

She indicated that security was held up at gunpoint by four males at 27Boxes on 7 August. “They tied them up in the control room and started grinding the Absa ATM inside the complex. They were seen and then fled, leaving their tools behind,” she said.
