Community members clean up Braamfontein Spruit at Alberts Farm Conservancy

The clean-up saw local businesses, schools and community roll up their sleeves for a better environment.

Community members, local organisations, and school groups rolled up their sleeves on September 19 for the Spruit Cleanup Day at Alberts Farm Conservancy.

The event formed part of World Cleanup Day and World Rivers Day, celebrating green belts and highlighting the vital role rivers play in urban environments. The Braamfontein Spruit is Johannesburg’s longest stream, flowing through numerous neighbourhoods from Northcliff to Midrand.

Volunteers from the Friends of Alberts Farm Conservancy committee, residents, the Lew Geffen Sotheby’s Realty team, and teachers, parents, and learners from the Northcliff High School Enviro Club joined forces with the Johannesburg City Parks Cooperative Programme team.

Together, the teams collected litter and waste from in and around the spruit, cleared the water channel along its length, removed invasive plants, and trimmed trees along the riverbank.

The Friends of Alberts Farm Conservancy committee thanked all participants and supporters for their team effort in restoring, cleaning, and protecting the community’s precious natural space.
