SOPHIATOWN – Stand-up comedian Virgil Prins is nominated for the international comedy competition
Virgil Prins, a stand-up comedian from Sophiatown, is among the 21 nominated comedians from around the world, who qualified for the Jokenation Competition.
Prins was one of 1 000 entrants of the international comedian’s competition.
He is appealing to his community to vote for him so he can qualify for the finals.
Jokenation is the world’s comedy talent search by Montreux Comedy and it seeks to find the best new comedic talent from all over the world.
“I’m happy my video made it, but I still needs more votes,” said Prins.
He said the voting date closes on 9 October.
The up-and-coming Prins has in the short space of four years risen to comedy heights performing alongside notable acts such as Loyiso Gola, Deepfried Man, Chris Forrest and many more.
One of his popular shows is Monday Comedy Night taking place at Poppy’s in Melville, every Monday night from 8pm to 10pm.
“Monday Night Comedy is a grassroot platform for stand-up comedians and South African comedy,” said Prins.
He explained that “The gig which runs weekly, serves also as a ‘testing ground’ for South Africa’s more established and professional comedians.”
He said the stage has been graced by the likes of Loyiso Gola, Kagiso Lediga, Chester Missing, Trevor Gumbi and Deep Fried Man.
“This is a starting point for young aspiring comedians,” said Prins.
