A soulful affair
SOPHIATOWN – Sophiatown the Mix hosts their first Jazz Encounter for the year with legendary composer and artist Pinise Saul.
Jazz lovers came together for an intimate, soulful affair on 30 January for the year’s first Jazz Encounter with internationally acclaimed South African singer and composer, Pinise Saul.
The event is hosted every month with different jazz artists headlining the event. This is seen as a way of celebrating South African jazz and its influence on the world. Fans of the legendary ballads of Saul were not left disappointed as every note she sang seemed to be accompanied by a powerful desire for her to sing for even longer.
Saul was exiled after her song ipintombi and spent her time in the UK travelling and singing with other exiled South African artists.
The event is held at Sophiatown, the Mix, which forms part of the town’s most cherished heritage sites. Events manager Rinkie Mqoluana said that the idea for the event was for it to be intimate.
“The great thing about having such events in Sophiatown is that in a way it feels as though this particular form of music has come back home,” said Mqoluana.
The audience was undeniably infatuated with the way Saul was able to infuse both contemporary and traditional elements to her songs, which had both the younger and older jazz lovers happy and applauding for more soulful tunes.
The next Jazz Encounter will be held in February with legendary artist Dorothy Masuka performing.
