A musical wonderland

Echoing off the stain glass windows, a symphony of sound rose to the ceilings of the St Charles Catholic church in Victory Park on 4 August.

The Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company presented, a musical wonderland featuring Johannesburg’s Youth Symphonic Wind Band and the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra (JYO).

It was a sanctuary filled with an array of instruments each contributing a differnt sound in pitch, texture and tempo. Brass trumpets, saxophones, violins, Chellos and more each bellowed a unique sound, uttering a beautiful harmonious symphony in unison.

The orchestra opened the evening with the ballad, Amparito Roca orginally played by Jamie Texidor and went on to cover some well know film themes from the movie Gladiator and Pirates of the Caribbean. The sound consumed the church and captivated an attentive audience that only punctured the silence with loud applause and a standing ovation.

1st September brings along the sun and the opening of the Johannesburg Arts Alive international festival. Come along to the University of Johannesburg Arts Center Kingsway Campus, Auckland park at 12am. The event is part of the city of joburg’s Arts Alive programme and will feature the symphonic wind band and the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra with a special guest musician from China who will perform the Yellow River Piano Concert with JYO.
