Candidate warns that personal safety warnings risk disempowering women

Shaun Lee-Oliver said women should also be taught how to defend themselves, rather than being told only to avoid dangerous situations, during a free community self-defence session.

Women and girls, who are repeatedly warned about personal safety, risk feeling disempowered, according to Ward 82 councillor candidate Shaun Lee-Oliver.

Speaking after a free self-defence session at the Danie van Zyl Recreation Centre in Newlands on October 10, Lee-Oliver said that while locking doors and avoiding certain places formed part of staying safe, teaching basic techniques was equally important. “There also needs to be a point where we actually teach our girls to be able to defend themselves, to have the confidence that, you know, if somebody comes against me, at least I’ll know the basics,” he said. He emphasised that even a small amount of time gained during a threatening encounter could make a difference.

The introductory session covered basic striking techniques, vulnerable body points and escape methods when grabbed or restrained. Participants were also shown how to manage their stress so they could make better decisions in threatening situations.

7th dan black belt in tang soo go and Ward 86 councillor candidate Gregory Hart echoed the importance of preparation, explaining that self-defence involved more than physical technique. Hart said the training encouraged women to walk confidently, carry themselves well, look ahead and remain alert. Hart said concerns about gender-based violence, murders and kidnappings affecting communities, particularly women and vulnerable people, prompted the initiative. He added that participants were having fun, which he considered important.

The class highlighted the value of combining safety awareness with practical skills, giving women an opportunity to learn basic ways to respond if they found themselves in a dangerous situation.
