The communities of Emmarentia and Greenside are uniting for a common goal: to bring about an effective solution to reclaim their streets and parks.
Just this last Sunday, 15 September, two meetings were held simultaneously in both suburbs inviting residents to have all their questions answered and to unite with the community for this common cause.
CAP (Community Active Protection) is a community based, not for profit organisation which effectively manages the accredited service provider on the ground and proactively fights crime.
“We can hold the security provider accountable for services provided and it’s on a cost plus basis which means that we are driving the right behaviours” says Kamil Ballim, a resident in Emmarentia and Zone leader driving the CAP project.
“The community takes back leverage from the provider. At the moment, the current solution in our suburbs is just so diluted.”
Tineke Wulffers, resident in Emmarentia, and media spokesperson for this initiative, visited both the meetings this week and is excited about the development of “Unity in the Community”.
She stressed that unity is strength and her sentiments are shared by Greenside resident Cuan Mulcahy who said, “this initiative brings people together – I like that”. Another Emmarentia resident, Peggy Vreken attended the meeting and has pledged to join CAP as she believes that a community based effort has to be safer than an individual contract.
“It makes common sense that if there is an operation wider than just your own house, a sharing of information and a coordinated effort, it must be safer. And I like the idea of a community effort – that everybody works together.”
Mark Van Jaarsveld, CEO of CAP was present at the meeting in Greenside and said that CAP will only launch once they are able to place an effective solution on the ground and have received 50% of the revenue required to do so.
This project is a community project, it requires the community to unite and pledge their commitment. The volunteer residents driving this project stress that people cannot wait to see what it will be like when it launches.
“Speak to your neighbour and attend a street meeting,” Jill Adams of Greenside urged.
