In celebration of World Teachers Day, Abbotts College Northcliff has honoured Life Sciences Teacher Nicole Du Plooy for her passion for the environment.

Du Plooy was so inspired by a documentary on sustainable development that she decided to embark on a life-changing mission and make a difference in the natural environment.

“The following quote in the documentary especially hit home for me: ‘Education should not take people away from land, but instill in them even more respect for it, because educated people are in a position to understand what is being lost. The future of the planet concerns all of us and you don't need a diploma to plant a tree.’”

Du Plooy and her Life Sciences pupils joined Generation Earth, a green networking platform for and by the youth. The organisation strives to recognize and develop green thinkers who are tomorrow’s global leaders.

They pledged their commitment to energy efficiency on 24 March by representing Abbotts College Northcliff at the 49M Energy Efficient Initiative held at Marks Park, which broke a Guinness World record by harvesting the kinetic energy of 2500 people bouncing on balls.

“We have established a Green Club in my class and at the College. Our mission is to green up our environment by picking up litter, cleaning our local streams and parks and by recycling our paper, glass and plastic,” Du Plooy said.

“My aim is to inspire the pupils of Abbotts College to make a difference and change the world for the betterment of the environment.”
