Months of unreliable water supply in Melville and surrounding suburbs have disrupted daily lives, leaving residents waking up at night to collect water and prompting protest organisers to threaten stronger action over service delivery.

The community is taking to the streets once again on September 14 at the corner of Main Road and 4th Avenue, demanding urgent action from Johannesburg Water over months of inconsistent supply.

Melville resident Zsofia Borsanyi says the unreliable supply has increasingly disrupted her work and home responsibilities, with the problem becoming more difficult to manage alongside frequent power cuts.

Borsanyi says the disruptions have also affected her sleep, as she sometimes wakes during the night to collect water.

The situation has become a financial concern for residents as well, with Borsanyi questioning why households continue to receive water-related charges despite the unreliable supply.

She says the consequences extend beyond turning on a tap and finding no water, as everyday tasks take longer, affecting her work and her ability to care for children, animals and family members.

For Josh Nel of the Melville Protest Steering Committee, the problem is no longer simply an inconvenience.

Nel says the area experienced an almost month-long outage in February, followed by an inconsistent supply, with some surrounding streets and suburbs still struggling to receive water reliably.

The continued disruptions have also fuelled calls for stronger action against the city. Nel says residents and organisers are considering a rates boycott because they believe their concerns are not being taken seriously.

Nel says the protests will not end simply because officials acknowledge residents’ complaints.

“Not just until the message gets heard, until we actually start seeing some real action,” Nel says.

Nel says residents want to see tangible improvements to water infrastructure and greater stability across the system.

Johannesburg Water has been approached for comment on September 14 and given a deadline of 14:00 tomorrow on the residents’ concerns and the ongoing disruptions.
