A carjacking on 2 October left a man nursing a gunshot wound in his left leg.
The incident occurred at around 10pm as the man and his girlfriend, a UJ student, approached the intersection of Putney and Ripley Road in a new Audi vehicle.
“We heard people screaming close to our house and then we heard gunshots,” said an eyewitness.
“A car came speeding up the road still firing shots, so we ran back into our property. After the car passed we went out again and I could see a person lying in the road. We went to assist and saw the guy was shot in the leg. By this stage his girlfriend was hysterical. A resident then phoned the various emergency services.”
UJ Security’s Fanie Schoeman was first to arrive on the scene as their acting head of security saw the scuffle and immediately called the control room. Schoeman administered first aid and then transported the victim to hospital. Brixton SAPS arrived soon after.
This recent shooting has left Brixton residents anxious as to what can be done to stem crime in the area. René van Niekerk of the Brixton Residents Association said that the community has taken the initiative to address a spate of violent crimes in conjunction with UJ.
“We as the commune project team under guidance of ward councillor Katja Naumann are currently in talks with high-level delegates from UJ to assess the security situation around the Kingsway campus”, he said.
“Many possibilities of how to improve the security are being discussed. We hope to be able to implement additional security measures in the near future.”
