JOBURG - These stats about Gauteng arose out of the Gauteng City-Region Observatory review held last week.

There were many interesting statistics mentioned at the Gauteng City-Region Review and even more that you can find online and play with interactively. Here are a few from the launch of the 2013 State of Gauteng City-Region Review held at Wits University on 25 October.

– 55% of South Africa’s national GDP is produced in Gauteng.

– One fifth of the country’s population lives in Gauteng.

– South Africans born outside of Gauteng make up 37% of the provinces population.

– 10% of people living in Gauteng were born outside of South Africa, the Western Cape has 5%.

– Green space accounts for 75% of Gauteng’s total area.

– 24% of Johannesburg’s Northern Suburbs is covered with trees.

– Gauteng is the largest waste producer in South Africa.

– Gauteng has the highest gas greenhouse emissions of any province.

– 49% of the Gauteng budget went to Local Government and housing, 18% to health, 15 % to education and 15% to roads and transport.

– Mining was the strongest growing sector in Gauteng in 2010 up 6.4%
