Esperanza Primary School’s foundation phase pupils received a donation of books from waterproofing and roofing company JBC Roof Cover on 25 October.
JBC provided the school with four wheeled cabinets of reading books that will be placed in classrooms to promote reading.
JBC’s financial officer Belinda Conradie said they decided to help a school as there is always a need to get the small children to develop.
“To get a better future you have to start with the small children in primary and pre-primary schools,” said Conradie.
Principal Martin Bensch appreciated the essence of such a donation as the primary school is reliant on corporate aid with certain educational resources.
Bensch aims to introduce a reward system that will promote reading in classrooms.
“We can use these books as a prize for the pupils who finish their work faster, and this would enable the teacher to attend to the other pupils while the others sit quietly and read” Bensch explained.
“Not every pupil visits the school library so with these cabinets it is easier to get the books to the learners in their classrooms,” he added.
Bensch also highlighted the significance of Grade R education.
“When parents don’t enrol their children in Grade R it becomes a challenge because they don’t have the exposure and therefore struggle when they get to Grade 1. It is really a problem because parents don’t realise the importance of Grade R.”
Conradie believes this is a start of a relationship between JBC and Esperanza Primary School and hopes to see a revolution in primary school children’s reading interest.
