The embankments around Braamfontein Spruit are detoriorating fast as the rainy season approaches and water levels rise.

Ward 117 Councillor Tim Truluck mentioned that residents in Victory Park and Parkhurst were in a panic when embankments started collapsing next to the spruit. “A task team from Lilithalethu Construction has been established to repair the existing gabion baskets that keeps the embankments in place. Erosion takes place because the river overflows and then wears away the embankments.”

City of Johannesburg Project Engineer Mukesh Hira said, “The scope of works mainly entails repairs of existing gabion baskets, which require corrective foundation measures as well as prevention of scouring below these gabion baskets. The construction works is taking place in four sections along the Braamfonteinspruit. The affected sections are mainly repairs endangering private property, as well as certain sections which require completely new construction work to protect City Power Electrical Pylons.”

Truluck concluded that residents who live next to the spruit should remain calm as these workers will take between two to three weeks to repair the damage left behind by the previous storm.
