Scout’s celebrate founder’s life
JOBURG - The North west Scouting Districts celebrated the life and achievements of scouting founder Lord Baden Powell.
Scouting’s founder Lord Robert Stephenson Baden-Powell was celebrated at the Johannesburg Zoo on 23 February.
The day, dubbed Baden-Powell Sunday, saw troops of the North West Scouting Districts gathered in honour of his life and achievements.
All the Scouts assembled and the flag bearers were led onto the band stand as the ceremony commenced.
A short prayer service was held by members of the 1st Blairgowrie Scout Troop followed by lively speeches from the Scouting district commissioners.
The day seemed fit to recognise excellence as service awards were handed out to Troop Scouters for years of service.
Chief Scout of Scouts South Africa, Sibusiso Vilane – world renowned mountaineer and adventurer, the first African to summit the highest mountains in each of the seven continents and has walked to the North and South Poles – gave a motivational speech on his achievements and the legacy he will leave behind.
Sibusiso urged the Scouts to encourage their peers to join the Scout Movement and reap the benefits of spending time outdoors.
He also encouraged parents to volunteer their time to this well-organised community.
A zoo treasure hunt was enjoyed by the Cubs, Girl Guides and Scouts which was followed by a picnic to conclude the day.
