Where’s Molly?

NORTHCLIFF - After a lifetime of neglect, Molly was granted a reprieve and a home for a short while. And now she's on the run, lost and scared.

For five years she was used as a breeding animal, existing solely to procreate. She lived and repeatedly gave birth in a shed-like structure that only contained a roof. Every day was a battle for her to keep herself and her numerous litters of puppies safe and warm.

The pups were taken away by her owner and sold for profit, but she received no care, and was mistreated cruelly. Eventually she was abandoned and left to fend for herself.

This is the story of Molly.

Molly, a five year-old Cocker spaniel has since been rescued from her awful circumstances by Spaniel Rescue South Africa, vetted and cared for and then adopted by foster mum Ruth Cox.

“But on 19 June, not long after being adopted, she slipped away from her home and she’s been running scared for 14 days,” Mandy Robinson of this organisation said on 2 July.

“We’re begging and pleading for assistance in finding Molly. She went missing from Carmel Avenue in Northcliff. Her body bears the scars of a lifetime of breeding and neglect, but in spite of this she is the sweetest dog.”

Spaniel Rescue South Africa have mounted an enormous rescue effort for the spaniel. They’re offering R6 000 reward, no questions asked, and have enlisted a full-time search party to find the lost dog. They’ve placed posters and distributed pamphlets tirelessly.

“We have two teams searching for Molly 24 hours a day,” Robinson said.

“We’re paying four people to look for her, and the other team members comprise of us and our families. This search has consumed our lives, but Molly is worth it.”

Another foster spaniel lover has followed Molly’s story. “There was an enormous group of spaniel rescuers combing Delta Park for her on Sunday, 29 June,” she said.

“They are incredibly dedicated. The work they do is incredible. And Molly has crept deep into the spaniel-lovers’ hearts. Many are weeping.”

Molly has been microchipped and was wearing a green Rogz collar when she went missing.

“There have been two credible sightings of her on 5th Street and on the corner of Beyers Naudé Drive and Milner Avenue,” Robinson said.

“But we haven’t found her. We’re not giving up though. If I have to walk 1 000s of kilometres to find her, I’ll do it. That dog has been through so much. Please, I’m begging and pleasing for assistance in finding her.”
