Have you seen ‘Barbie’?

NORTHCLIFF – Have you seen one-of-a-kind, handmade neon orange Lotus 7 race car? This hardly inauspicious vehicle was stolen in Northcliff.

Saul Bonn (17) devoted two years to lovingly and painstakingly build a one-of-a-kind car – a handmade Lotus 7 race car. Now, four years later, the car the Victory Park-based Bonn-family jokingly refer to as the ‘Barbie-car’ has been stolen, and a heartbroken Bonn is beseeching Joburgers to look out for it.

“I was at the Northcliff Ridge water tower on 15 September with my friends to watch the sunset,” Bonn said on 17 September.

“We went into the ‘Eco Park’ and returned to the parking area at about 6pm. As we got back, I realised my vehicle was not there and then actually heard it driving away down Frederick Avenue.”

The group of friends searched for the vehicle until almost 10pm but had no luck.

“We contacted the police and the local security companies immediately and they placed a lookout for my vehicle,” Bonn said.

Bonn said the car is kind of hard to miss. “It is a hand-built Lotus 7. It’s one of a kind, there is none like it on the roads. The car is licensed and the unique black and luminous orange colours are extremely ‘out there’ – you’ll definitely know when you see it.”

Bonn’s father Ian said the car doesn’t have monetary value per se – but it’s unique and it has a lot of sentimental value. “We’re asking our neighbours and people in our area to keep their eyes peeled, please.”

There are security cameras on the road where the car was stolen, and footage shows two men taking the car. Bonn’s father said it was presumed the men had taken the car for a joyride, and because it is so unique, they would probably dump it somewhere.
