The Auckland Park Academy of Excellence hosted their second Annual Fun Walk on 21 September.
The theme for this year’s walk was Be smart don’t start. The aim of the walk was to create awareness within the community about the scourge of drug abuse. The colourful display of banners and posters enhanced by some colourful costumes and a festival of balloons brought warmth to a crisp spring morning. Parents, grandmas and grandpas, uncles, aunts and cousins turned up in droves to show support for their children and the school. The Al Khaleel Drug Support Group was present to reinforce the strong message.
The principal, Nadia Motara, highlighted the importance of forming strong partnerships between home and school in order to empower and educate children to make informed choices.
The camaraderie shown among teachers, parents and pupils bodes well for the theme of the walk as well as for the future of the school. The chairman of the PTA, Ebrahim Patelia said, “The event showed the importance of focusing on community building through social activities. Parents, children and teachers found a rare opportunity to socialise in a fun environment and build bonds that we hope will make it easier to tackle the scourge of drug abuse and fragmented families.”
