Inside the co-ordinated Northcliff operation that led to kidnapping victim’s rescue
A carefully co-ordinated operation and verified intelligence proved decisive in the rescue of kidnapping victim Alex van Heerden.
While much of the public attention surrounding Alex van Heerden’s kidnapping centred on her disappearance in Northcliff and safe recovery, those involved in the investigation say the operation’s success came down to disciplined co-ordination between police, private security, community structures, and carefully verified intelligence.
Private security and intelligence drive breakthrough
Operations director at TAU Security Mohammed Modan said the investigation brought together a multi-disciplinary team of law enforcement agencies and private security companies that worked around the clock following Van Heerden’s kidnapping in Northcliff. According to Modan, investigators identified the white Renault Clio allegedly used in the kidnapping after linking it to a previous kidnapping and hijacking case in 2025. “Intelligence gathered from confidential sources then led investigators through several locations in Katlehong, Meyerton, Lakeside, and Three Rivers.”

Modan added that the vehicle was eventually located in Three Rivers, where investigators seized several exhibits, including balaclavas allegedly used during the crime, forensic evidence, cellphones, and personal belongings belonging to the victim.
Modan said the investigation continued across multiple addresses before new intelligence led officers to Vosloorus, where Van Heerden was found unharmed and later reunited with her family. He warned that the investigation almost faced a significant setback, after unauthorised missing-person posters containing the victim’s cellphone number were circulated on social media. “The victim’s cellphone had been taken during the kidnapping and could have assisted investigators in locating her. Requests had to be made for those posts to be removed because they placed the victim in danger, and threatened to compromise the investigation during an extremely sensitive stage.”
Police investigations remain ongoing as officers continue searching for additional suspects.
Community partnerships key to success
Mahmood Cassim, of Johannesburg District Community Police Board, described the co-operation between SAPS, private security companies, Fairland Community Policing Forum patrollers, and victim support volunteers as fundamental to the operation’s success.
Cassim said one of the greatest challenges was preventing unverified information from spreading publicly. “The victim must always be prioritised and sensitive information should never be divulged. This not only places the investigation in jeopardy; it risks the life of the victim.”
He noted that kidnapping investigations differ significantly from ordinary missing person cases, because public communication must be carefully managed while the victim remains at risk. “Unlike missing person cases where public engagement is fundamental, kidnappings are handled far more cautiously. Once the SAPS anti-kidnapping unit takes over, information shared publicly becomes extremely limited unless investigators specifically require assistance.”

He urged members of the public to report factual information directly to investigators, rather than speculate online. “If the public is aware of anything, even the smallest detail that seems insignificant, it should be brought to the attention of the investigating officer. The best partnership remains that between SAPS, private security, and communities.”
The operation ultimately resulted in Van Heerden being rescued safely and one suspect being arrested, with police confirming that investigations into the kidnapping are continuing.
The publication did make contact with the Van Heerden family, who stated that, at present, due to the circumstances and the ongoing investigation, they were not comfortable coming forward for an interview.
