Exercise is important for diabetics

NORTHCLIFF – Nurse and diabetic educator Sister Nicola Williams shares her knowledge on exercise and diabetes.

In the spirit of World Diabetes Day which is observed annually on 14 November, Sister Nicola Williams from NHC Health Centre based in Northcliff shares her knowledge about exercise and diabetes.

In raising awareness, Williams informed that diabetics need to be educated about the importance of exercises.

“Diabetics need to test their blood glucose before they exercise and ensure that they have eaten a snack with sufficient carbohydrates relating to the duration and intensity of the exercise,” said Williams.

She added that, “If the blood glucose level is between 5 – 7 mmol/l then a snack is vital to prevent hypoglycaemia (low blood sugars).

“The sustained effect of exercise on blood sugar levels lasts for the next 24 hours, said Williams.

Individuals with diabetics on insulin need to be prepared if they are going to exercise.

“Aerobic and resistance training improve insulin sensitivity and reduce the blood glucose levels.”

A sugar-free protein shake may be taken one and a half hours before exercise. They need to keep well hydrated during exercise and take their blood glucose meters with them in case they need to test for a low blood sugar, shared Williams.

“In Type 2 patients exercise is vital to improve insulin sensitivity as well as reducing risk of a stroke or heart attack. For weight loss 60 minutes of exercise a day is advised. A minimum of 45 minutes a day of exercise is recommended.”

When is exercise not recommended?

  • If your blood glucose is above 12mmol/l
  • If you have ketones in your urine
  • If you have a blood sugar 5mmol/l or below
  • If you have nerve damage to your feet or foot ulcers.
