Rea Vaya bus strike in its second week

AUCKLAND PARK – Bus drivers who have not returned to work will be slapped with disciplinary action.

Commuters continue to be left with a huge transport inconvenience as Rea Vaya bus services in Johannesburg remain suspended.

Piotrans and Litsamaiso approached the Labour Court to put an end to the illegal work stoppage.

“ After we found out that they were striking, we sent them an ultimatum to return to work by 4 February and they did not respond so now we are following a disciplinary process to resolve the matter,” said Dumisani Mntambo, Piotrans’ general strategy and transformation general manager.

About 160 drivers deserted buses in Johannesburg Central on 2 February.

“It is shocking that drivers can abandon their positions without notice or warning. At this point I am not at liberty to list their grievances because we will have to hear from an independent investigator who is currently reviewing the situation.”

This led to the disruption of services and severe congestion.

“It is painful for us to be going through this process and understand the suffering and the inconvenience that our clients are facing. To our clients please bear with us with the process we have embarked on so that this type of event never happens again,” he said.
