Man stands on street corner for a job
GREENSIDE – A 20-year-old foreigner wants to make money working instead of begging.
Neatly dressed, hair combed and patted down Rodrick Moyo (20) stands on the corner of 11th Avenue and Fourth Street in Houghton with a bunch of resumes.
He wakes up early in the morning and walks to Houghton from Ellis Park and then walks back in the evening.
“I was working at PicknPay as a merchandiser during the December holidays but I lost that job when the permanent employees came back from the holidays. I decided to come out to the streets and market myself instead of just sitting at home,” he said.
Greenside resident Lindsay Hopkins saw Moyo on the street and decided to talk to him.
“I saw this well’-dressed kid standing at an intersection with a sign saying ‘looking for a job’ I pulled over and said hi,” retold Hopkins.
Hopkins is trying to help Moyo find a job.
“I was happy because he wasn’t begging but rather asking for a job. I asked him to give me a call and within a couple of hours he called me.”
“I was very impressed because I know what it is like to look for work at a young age,” she said.
Moyo is ecstatic about the help he has received.
“I am so happy that I met Lindsay. Nothing promising had happened until I met her. She has made CVs for me and taught me how to market myself. I am so happy because I didn’t expect such things to happen. I can’t explain how happy I am.”
Moyo came to South Africa from Zimbabwe on 2 December 2014.
“My mother and my young brother died and my father went off to marry another woman when I was a year old. I have a grandmother who is almost the only family I have.
It is hard to find jobs in Zimbabwe and I have responsibilities.”
He is looking for any kind of job that will give him an income.
“I can’t choose jobs right now I would do anything. I would like to supplement some subjects for my matric so that I can go study land surveying.”
Hopkins has posted Moyo’s story on various community groups on Facebook to spread the word on Moyo’s endeavours.
