Jazz dance studio Show Group cleaned up at the International Grand Prix dance Competition in Spain on 15 June.
See the story leading up to the competition:
The dance group competed against 37 countries and 100 choreographers.
Daniel Swanepoel, owner of the dance studio, won Best Choreographer. He said, “It’s a great feeling. There were 37 countries that took part so to be told that my choreography was tops, from an international panel, makes me believe that SA isn’t behind the times on the international stage.”
According to Swanepoel the dancers will have come back feeling like they are part of a winning studio. Swanepoel said, “Confidence is key on stage. That will spread to other SA groups that take part in overseas competitions in the future. They will feel that they can win against anyone.”
The contemporary group Rush achieved a credible second place behind Singapore. The group showcased a piece by Swanepoel in which they highlighted the chaos and rush in society. Swanepoel described the show as, “Cell phones, meetings, money hungry… The dancer in a flowing red dress represented the change, the beauty of nature, a soft wind that we need to connect with, to break from life’s rush.”
Swanepoel concluded with, “In fact we set the mark on this one. It allows me to carry on with my work/choreography, knowing that I am on the right track. It also lets the dancers feel they are with the right trainer.”
