UPDATE: Phoenix rising from the ashes
GREENSIDE – Ward Councillor confirms imminent installation of a traffic circle at notorious accident site on Gleneagles Road.
Following a head-on collision at the Y-junction of Gleneagles and Sunningdale roads on 2 July, in which two cars went up in a ball of flames, Ward councillor Amanda Forsythe has confirmed that Johannesburg Roads Agency has committed to installing a traffic circle as a traffic calming measure.
Forsythe said she had been reporting accidents and issues at this intersection for years.
“That particular corner and requests for urgent traffic calming measures has been in my Infrastructure Development Plan for Ward 87 since 2011. I have communicated with Esther Schmidt, operations manager for Traffic Engineering at JRA, and Owen Whelan, traffic engineer for JRA in Region B, about it on several occasions.”
“Earlier this year, my Ward Committee and I met with Andrew Bodibe, regional manager for JRA in Region B,” said Forsythe.
“About two months ago, I conducted another site inspection with Whelan and members of the Greenside Residents’ Association, including chairperson, Bridget Steer. I can confirm that a traffic circle has definitely been approved for that intersection, and have been ensured it will be installed soon.”
Resident Carol Pittendrigh, who lives on this corner, feels that this long-overdue traffic-calming measure cannot come soon enough.
“You have no idea how awful it is on an ongoing basis to hear brakes screech and to wait for the bang, then to wonder what one will find on the corner. Sometimes bumper bashings, sometimes more severe, but always traumatised drivers.”
