Liquor license policy hearing to be held

MELVILLE – The Gauteng Liquor Board will host a hearing to address issues and concerns about restaurant liquor licences.

The Gauteng Liquor Board, will be hosting a hearing pertaining to policies and regulations that involve restaurant liquor licences on 15 July at 10am.

The hearing will be held at the Gauteng Liquor Board’s Johannesburg Office which is located on the 2nd floor of 124 Main Street, corner of Kruis Street and opposite the old Carlton Hotel in the City of Johannesburg.

Representatives from the Melville Resident’s Association (MRA) will be attending this hearing in the hope of having their concerns and objections heard. They have encouraged members of the community to also attend the hearing and show their support for controlled regulation of liquor licences for restaurants and night clubs.

These concerns come from issues that have arisen on Beyers Naudé Drive (‘Main Road’), Melville where there has been an objection against unlawful liquor licence practices in a bar located on the road.

Co-chairperson of the MRA, Andrew Marais has revealed that members of the public can attend this hearing and lodge their objections regarding the liquor licence policy. “Section 27(2) of the Gauteng Liquor Act and does provide that all interested persons, including the applicant and any person who has lodged an objection to an application, shall be afforded an opportunity to be heard,” he said.

Marais further explained, “I would therefore encourage all residents who wish to have a say to attend the hearing even if they did not put in a written objection.”
