MRA calls for new member and votes
MELVILLE – The Meville Resident's Association is set to host their latest annual general meeting.
The Melville Resident’s Association (MRA) will be holding its next annual general meeting (AGM) at the Heritage Baptist Church at the corner of 7th Avenue and 5th Street in Melville on 6 August at 7pm.
New committee members for the current MRA year, which began on 1 July and will run to 30 June next year, will be elected.
Co-chairperson of the MRA, Andrew Marais has encouraged members of the greater Melville community to attend the AGM, although only paying members of the association will be allowed to vote or stand for election to the association’s committee. Matters to be addressed include a proposed moratorium on the granting of further liquor licences in Melville, a proposal regarding a community security system and the greater Melville Fibrehood.
MRA co-chairperson Derek Milne believes that the threats to Melville’s unique, village-like character are greater than ever, and that the MRA needs to become a more active, involved body which works first and foremost to protect the interests of residents. “The residents are after all our constituents. We need to demonstrate that we will do all we can to preserve and protect their interests, including their investments in their properties and the quality of life which our suburb is known for. All our work should be to that end,” he said.
Ward 87 councillor, Amanda Forsythe also welcomed more participation from members of the Melville community. “I strongly encourage the community to attend and elect movers and shakers within the association’s committee, ” she said.
Forsythe pointed out that resident associations serve as a crucial social platform in the overall well-being of a community. “A resident’s association can either make or break a community. It sets the tone for a suburb in a positive or negative fashion, and I sincerely hope that the community can elect representatives that make a difference in their community,” she said.
The annual membership fee for the association is R350. To become a member, email – mrawarwicksoulsby@melville.org.za to obtain a membership form.
