Soapbox races galore

VICTORY PARK – De La Salle Holy Cross College Junior School held their not-so-slippery soap box derby.

The exciting racing extravaganza Soapbox Derby took place at De La Salle Holy Cross College Junior School on 18 July.

The annual derby at the school in Victory Park was themed around the Rugby World Cup 2015. Each grade represented a nation with Grade 1 pupils showcasing Ireland and Grade 7s sporting the berets of France.

A past pupil, Daniel Baron, commenced the race by singing the National Anthem. The parents cheered on as the pupils raced around the track in their derby soapbox go-karts. The final whistle blew with the Grade 6C class grabbing first place with 41 laps.

“What an amazing day with the divine weather and fantastic community spirit. I am sure Madiba was smiling down on our wonderful school on Saturday while we celebrated his birthday for him.” said deputy principal of the college, Carren Ilsley.

Ten per cent of the event’s proceeds went to a feeding scheme at St Augustine’s Primary School in Parow, a Holy Cross Sisters Convent school, which has a feeding scheme for 300 of its pupils.
