GALLERY: ‘I’d like to win one’ – Dale Steyn

ROOSEVELT PARK – Dale Steyn looks ahead to the next World Cup.

Dale Steyn took some time out of his visit to Franklin D Roosevelt Primary School, in Roosevelt Park, to talk about his cricket career and aspirations.

Steyn has taken 402 test wickets in 80 matches since his debut for the South African Proteas in 2004. He remains a fast bowling powerhouse and according to him, there is no stopping now. “I’m still the fittest guy in the team, still bowl the fastest and [I] take more wickets than anybody in the country,” said the 32-year-old. When asked how much longer he would play cricket Steyn replied confidently, “Till I can’t run anymore.”

Though many challenges lie ahead for a Proteas team that has produced its fair share of woes, none loom larger than the International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup. Steyn is not young by international sport standards, but still has strong aspirations for the next World Cup. “I’d like to win one,” Steyn said, smiling, “I might be playing my best cricket in three years’ time.”

Despite his confidence, Steyn still spoke about the pressures of playing the game at such a high level consistently. “If I bowl badly, get a duck, I might not play the next game,” he said, “It’s about dealing with those pressures.” Indeed Steyn continues to exhibit fearsome form and looks to be able to back up his own selection in the foreseeable future.

Steyn also spoke kindly about Kagiso Rabada, a young addition to the team, brimming with potential. “He’s great, he’s got everything. He’s strong, tall [and has] a good head on his shoulders,” explained Steyn, “He’s good looking, so he’s marketable.” Rabada will be looking to hone his talent by learning from experienced players like Steyn. “It’s always nice to see the kids put their hands up,” reflected Steyn.
