Ayanda scores international acclaim

JOBURG – The locally produced film, 'Ayanda', premiered on 8 October on our shores and is currently on circuit.

Ayanda, a local film produced by Leading Lady Productions and Real Eyes International, premiered on 8 October. The film was produced by actress Terry Pheto and directed by Sara Blecher.

Ayanda received a Special Jury Award after it first premiered in the Los Angeles Film Festival and was honoured as the 2015 Durban International Film Festival’s opening film.

American director, screenwriter and film maker of Array Distribution, Ava DuVernay decided to distribute the movie in the USA which is currently in the top 11 spot of the Box Office.

The National Film and Video Foundation CEO Zama Mkosi said that together with the Ministry of Arts and Culture, the foundation hosted an industry stakeholder engagement with the goal of ensuring growth of the film industry.

“In light of all the exciting local films that are screening at cinemas nationwide, we once again encourage the public to show support of the industry,” she said.

Mkosi also added that South Africans do not have many local films to choose from so they should therefore not miss the opportunity to enjoy local content.

During his speech, South African Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa said, “This meeting must be seen as part of an ongoing engagement within the industry to make sure that we come up with ways of improving the distribution and marketing of our films,” he said.

Mthethwa also said that South Africa is one of the oldest film industry, therefore it is important to work together to change the industry for the better.
