AUCKLAND PARK – Lecturers, students and staff members from the University of Johannesburg came to together to raise a R1 million for needy students.
Lecturers, students, staff and residents all worked together to raise R1 million at the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Future Walk. About 1 000 people walked to aid needy students. UJ Vice Chancellor Professor Ihron Rensburg said that through different initiatives, throughout the year R37 million was raised which would go to assisting 650 students with fees and boarding.
“It’s really great to do something fun for a serious reason,” Prof Rensburg said. The professor and MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi completed the 5km walk. Prof Rensburg said that the university was doing its part in creating possibilities for the country’s future leaders.
“This was the first time that the walk took place, we are going to work on increasing participation for next year as we are being proactive with our efforts to give academically deserving students a chance,” Prof Rensburg said. He pointed out that the university was trying to bridge the gap that was left by insufficient National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NFSAS) funding, which resulted in fewer students gaining access or continuing their studies at higher education institutions.
UJ’s senior director of sports, Nomsa Mahlangu said that annually, thousands of successful Matriculants, driven youthful optimism, try to gain entry into institutions of higher learning across the country but there were a great number of students who could not afford university education.
