Author releases third edition of architectural beauty

NORTHCLIFF – 'Church Tourism in South Africa – A travel Odyssey' features beautiful architectural features of churches in South African countrysides.

Phillipe Menache and Darryl David collaborated in their latest offering, Church Tourism in South Africa – A Travel Odyssey.

The book focuses on the architecture of Christian churches in South Africa that are mostly situated in smaller towns. Menache and Davids released two previous books titled, 101 Country Churches of South Africa and A Platteland Pilgrimage.

Their latest offering features the extraordinary architectural beauty of some of the country churches in South Africa and the role they have played in their communities throughout their existence.

Menache, who is a Northcliff resident, said that the range of books has no religious emphasis or reference but focuses on the hidden architectural beauties that many South Africans do not have the opportunity to witness.

“Some of my favourite features in the book are the Anglican Cathedral in Grahamstown which is so massive and beautiful, and has been there since the 1850s. The Baptist Reformed Church in Graaff-Reinet has a good decorative style and is well-positioned in the community.”

Menache said his passion for architecture started in the ’70s when he travelled out of Johannesburg and realised how beautiful churches in small towns are.

Church Tourism in South Africa – A Travel Odyssey features a bonus 16-page feature by renowned architect Wynand Louw about his own buildings.

“Although Wynand built a number of buildings I felt in this edition I wanted to acknowledge him for his memorable work he did between 1910 and 1960,” Menache said.

Copies of the book are sold at R300, and consist of 164 pages. The book can be purchased directly from Menache.
