Bowls just turned into an evening sport

NORTHCLIFF – The game of bowls can now be played in the evening, thanks to new floodlights.

Twenty-two teams and 88 bowlers in total, took part in an evening tournament of bowls at the Northcliff Country Club on 24 November. The tournament has already been running for five weeks on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Fanus Viviers, bowls chairperson at the club said that the tournament was his idea. “We received a donation to put up floodlights at the club,” said Viviers. He added that not many other bowling clubs have floodlights, and by hosting a night tournament, they hoped to attract new members.

A stigma of bowls is that it is only played by older people, but this tournament attracted young people, children and women as well. According to Milton Rip, committee member of the bowling club, the tournament attracted not only club members, but community members as well. Viviers and Rip agreed that most of the players who played in this tournament were beginners.

This has been a great social event. “People loved to play bowls in the evening. After every game we have a braai,” said Viviers. The finals of this tournament will be on 3 December. The tournament was so successful that the club is going to host another evening tournament in February.
