No upgrades at Roosevelt Park Substation

ROOSEVELT PARK – City Power says Roosevelt Park Substation upgrades are in progress, as preparatory work has been done but not any physical work yet.

City Power has advised that preparatory work has commenced at Roosevelt Park Substation, but no physical work has been done yet.

City Power spokesperson Yumna Sheik said there are a number of processes that must be followed in the lead-up to commencement of the upgrades at the substation.

“It is not absolutely clear when physical work will start on site but, it is estimated that it will begin in the next five to six months,” said Sheik.

Resident Nicholas Lorimer explained that over the past year, the Northcliff, Roosevelt Park and Risidale areas have been subjected to numerous power outages, some lasting several days.

“All of these outages originated from the Roosevelt Park Substation. During the cause of the past year there has also been two explosions and small fires at the substation and it is clear that the station is badly in need of serious repairs or replacement,” said Lorimer.

Ward 88 Councillor Pat Richards also commented on 7 December, said she has asked the Mayoral Committee (MMC) responsible for power to replace the Roosevelt Park Substation, but no plans have been presented to her yet.

“The plans have apparently been set up but nothing concrete has been done yet. It is suspected that the ball will only start rolling in February 2016,” said Richards.

Lorimer said he feels the City of Joburg is not taking this issue seriously.

“Considering the number of outages, it is only a matter of time until a spike in demand causes another serious problem. The substation should have been replaced or repaired already and the longer the City drags its feet the worse the problem is going to get,” said Lorimer.
