New SANBS CEO introduced

CONSTANTIA KLOOF – The SANBS teaches people about blood donation with a tour to the laboratory, while listening to survival stories.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) held a media breakfast in Constantia Kloof on 11 December. The new CEO, Trevor Vroom was introduced to all participants at the breakfast.

“To sleep sound at night, we have to know that we can save lives by donating blood. The reason why SANBS exists is to save lives,” said Vroom. He added that he would like to thank people who take time out of their day to donate blood. A slideshow was played to educate people about blood donation and how their blood is used to save lives.

Apart from introducing Vroom, two recipients shared their stories. Tebogo Mmphahlele had to infuse himself with blood from a young age due to a severe disease. He said that he first received blood in 2012 and it changed his life. He is now a hiker to share the story of blood donation. Another recipient, Elzandré

Venter said that she was very excited to be able to donate blood once she turned 16. However, after being diagnosed with anemia, she had to receive blood rather than donate blood. “If you can give 10 minutes of your time to save a life, why wouldn’t you,” asked Venter.

The day finished off with a tour of the laboratory, so that people could get a chance to see how the blood is being prepared for donation.
