SAVF shares Christmas spirit

NEWLANDS – SAVF hosts annual three-day holiday programme for less-fortunate children of the Newlands community.

The Suid-Afrikaanse Vroue-Federasie (SAVF) hosted their annual three-day holiday programme for the less-fortunate children of their feeding scheme in Newlands from 9 to 11 December.

SAVF social auxiliary worker Hannie Reyneke said the event forms part of their feeding scheme project during which they feed 120 children daily.

She explained the SAVF is a NGO that renders social services to people to improve their quality of life.

“Our vision is to make a peaceful impact in the community by creating life-changing and inspiring opportunities to people so they can live meaningfull lives,” said Reyneke.

She said the theme of this year’s holiday programme was Caring for the environment.

“Each child received a Coke bottle on the first day which they then cut in half, decorated and planted a plant in it to nurture at home over the three days. We wanted to express the importance of the environment to the children,” said Reyneke.

Volunteers from the Sophiatown SAPS, the Ondersteuningsraad Johannesburg and Newlands community members assisted with the children.

Reyneke said the three-day project sponsored by Wesbank Fleet Angels was jam-packed with fun and activities for the children.

She said apart from the plant project, the children also played games, learned how to line dance and received lunch every day.

She concluded Christmas Father also made his appearance on 11 December and gifts were handed out to the children.
