2015 has been yet another year of horrific car accidents around the Northcliff and Melville area. The department of transport said drunk driving remains one of the main contributing factors to crashes. Department of Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said new road fatality statistics have shown 80 per cent of the deaths on the country’s roads comprise of adults and males between the ages of 19 and 34. Public transport users were alarmed on 7 January when a tree fell onto a taxi on the corner of Caroline and Krause streets in Brixton. A few tips for driving in wet weather conditions were provided.
A Greenside residential property was subject to an unfortunate accident at 7am when a taxi driver allegedly lost control of his vehicle on the corner of Barry Hertzog Avenue and Muirsfield Road on 8 January.
Top Billing presenter Simba Mhere died on 31 January in a fatal car crash in Johannesburg. Paasenger and friend, Katy-Shady O’Brian died in the crash on the N3 North near the Marlboro offramp, and other victims were airlifted from the scene.
Road accidents involving the death of school children have raised questions about the road safety in South Africa. On 3 February, a child died and 18 others were injured –15 of them critically, in an accident in Pyramid in Pretoria, while 13 children were injured in Alberton on 2 February.
An accident at the intersection of Rustenburg and Craighall roads in Victory Park Estate left one man injured. According to the driver of the vehicle, said he was turning at the intersection when the vehicle’s brakes failed.

Public Service and Administration Minister, Collins Chabane was killed in an accident on the N1 at around 1am on the morning of 15 March. His vehicle collided with a truck on the N1 between Gauteng and Limpopo.
Richard Henyekane passed away in a car accident in the early hours of 7 April. Henyekane was in a light motor vehicle with four other passengers who also succumbed to the fatal crash.
A JMPD patrol car on duty and a blue Toyota Conquest collided at Beyers Naudé and Milner Street near Northcliff on 26 October.
Three people were critically injured after they were involved in a crash on the N1 between Beyers Naudé Drive and 14th Avenue when the vehicle allegedly lost control and crashed into a tree on the side of the road.
