GALLERY: Schools’ sports round up 2015
These rising stars achieved their best in sport.
It has been a great year for our local schools’ sports teams as young players whacked their opponents with intentions to retain or claim their crowns.
These are some of the excelling school teams and pupils.
In January, two siblings, Robyn and Jonathan Bulmer climbed the national tennis rankings with Robyn rated the 46th best women’s singles player in the country and 48th doubles as of 9 January.
Johathan (15), a student of Northcliff High, was rated 36th in the U16 boys’ singles category also as of 9 January.The siblings excelled in sport, following the success of their mother, Tracey.
In 2014, Robyn helped her school to win two provincial tournaments and the national St Mary’s Festival, and achieved a highest ranking of 35th in the country for women.
Laerskool Louw Geldenhuys U8 cricket team performed admirably to only lose to the best cricketers in the country by one run on 11 January.
The Louwtjies played against a team made up of Proteas men and women cricketers in the second match of the KFC Mini-Cricket vs Proteas Tour at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium, Illovo, in January.
In June, a young Parkview Golf Club member Cole Stevens (13) added another accolade to his golf achievements.
Stevens won the Golf School of Excellence (TGSE) and Central Gauteng Golf Union (CGGU) winter tournament. His wishes are to nurture his golf talent in the United States.
Eight martial arts students from Alchemy Dojang in Blackheath jetted off to Las Vegas for the championships in August.
These students were trained in a variety of events, including a number of disciplines and weapons across traditional and non-traditional disciplines.
The team coach Master Gregory Hart has represented the country numerous times at the competition – bringing back an accolade or two.
Tang soo do is a Korean martial art that focuses on strength, fitness, balance, control and dedication.
De La Salle Holy Cross College senior girls’ soccer team won the Discovery Johannesburg Primary Schools Soccer Programme in September.
The programme kicked off with trials at the Discovery Festival in May, and proceeded to the Discovery Knockout Cup preliminary rounds in June, leading to the finals in August.
A total of 120 schools participated in the knockout cup, with six age groups from U9 to U14. The College’s senior girls soccer team won the championship on 12 August. They beat Fairsand Primary School in the final, with the score 1– 0.
In October, Van Rooyen Mibe of Wits Football club became one of the selected soccer champions.
The Rand Central Local Football Association (RCLFA) districts U10 team played in the Safa Johannesburg U10/12 tournament on 24 October, where 12 soccer champions, including Mibe, were selected from 500 young players.
Mibe is one of the 12 champions who finished at the top of Group B with 10 points after four games (three wins and a draw), 11 goals for and two against.The boys went on to defeat Eldorado in the semi-final 2–0 and won the final, beating Alexandra 1–0.
