Westpark Cemetery in a bad state

MONTGOMERY PARK – Joburg cemeteries manager urges residents to report suspicious activities at cemeteries.

A Roosevelt Park resident is outraged at the state of Westpark Cemetery in Montgomery Park.

The resident who asked to stay anonymous, said that this has made her visits to the cemetery difficult. “The grass is uncut and there is no water,” said the resident. She also stated that water was being sold at R10 in 5l bottles to people coming to visit the cemetery.

Joburg City Park’s manager for cemeteries, Reggie Moloi, commented, “The staff that cuts the grass has been on leave for the December holidays and will be back on 11 January for maintenance.”

He also said that Westpark Cemetery is one of the the many cemeteries that are victims of vandalism, “The taps get stolen, we even replaced them with plastic taps and those taps were stolen as well,” said Moloi. He added that residents should not buy water from anyone, “Those people do not work for the cemetery,” he said.

He urged residents to report anyone who sells them water on cemetery grounds or to take a photo of them if they can. He concluded that the only taps at the cemetery are the taps close to the offices.

Ward 88 Councillor Pat Richards said that she has not received any complaints about the cemetery, “I would advise the person with the problem to contact me so that we can isolate the problem and sort it,” said Richards. She said that she will contact Westpark Cemetery and Johannesburg City Parks to follow up on the complaint.
