Tea for children with disabilities
BLACKHEATH – Three children with disabilities that effect their movement could have a chance on a better life with the help of a American therapy.
The Hope in One Hemisphere is an initiative launched to raise funds for therapy for three children with disabilities. US-based, Patricia Holman, Guild Certified Feldenkrais and Anat Baniel Method for Children practitioner, will come to South Africa to provide therapy to the children if the necessary funds can be raised. The Anat Baniel Method is a cutting-edge Neuro Movement approach that transforms the lives of children and adults to move beyond pain and limitation.

Enrique Garcia (9) developed intermittent facial paralysis in 2010 after a routine immunisation for Hepatitis A and B. His mother, Avenida Moodley, said that this rapidly progressed to epileptic seizures. Garcia was diagnosed with Rasmussen’s encephalitis which is a rare inflammatory neurological disorder. “We were devastated when my son become so ill. He was no longer able to walk or interact with us.” Moodley added that he had up to 100 seizures a day.
He underwent surgery in 2011 that left him with only the left hemisphere of his brain. His entire left side weakened. According to Moodley, her son is doing well, despite that he is now a hemiplegic as a result of his trauma. Garcia received 10 sessions of the therapy last year, thanks to funds raised. “The therapy has had an extremely positive impact on him. The funds will help Garcia to attend an another set of 10 sessions.”
Kheyana Weitz (5) was born with cerebral palsy. According to her grandmother and guardian, Charlene Kamineth, Weitz is aware of everything around her. She is unable to walk and cannot sit without support. The funds raised will send Weitz to the Neuro Movement therapy for the first time.
Delano van der Merwe (12) will also benefit from the funds raised.
A Valentine’s tea will be hosted in Blackheath on 27 February to raise funds for the children. The tea will take place at flat 16, Kenton, Lewisham Road, at 12pm. Entrance is R100 per person. The dress code is red, white or pink.
According to Moodley, they want to host a dance later in March to raise even more funds. For tickets and more information on the cause, Moodley can be contacted, see details below.
