The Grade 7 pupils of Franklin D Roosevelt attended a leadership development camp at Maraneman on the Vaal outside of Sasolburg in the Free State.
According to Principal Hilton Westlake, the pupils were invited to participate in this camp from 24 to 26 February. Westlake said that most of the pupils were very eager to go on the camp. “Pupils who could not afford the fees of the camp were sponsored by the school to join their classmates on the camp,” said Westlake.
The camp helped to identify the true leaders during team-building exercises and problem-solving activities. “This enabled peers and teachers to vote more effectively in the council leader election,” added Westlake. A total of 29 council leaders have been elected as a result and without the insight provided by the leadership camp, the task would have been more difficult.
“We intend to make this an annual event as this camp turned out to be so successful,” concluded Westlake.
