A runaway thief jumped into Westdene dam to evade his captors after he was caught stealing.
It was raining when the suspect was chased by security guards and the community to Westdene Dam on 21 April. At some point he decided his only escape was via the dam. Much to his dismay Sophiatown Police, community members and security guards were waiting on the shore.

The suspect allegedly tried to steal goods in a guard house near the dam.
According to the Westdene Johannesburg CROW Facebook page, the thief stole a kettle out of the guard house and tried to conceal it by taking the guard’s bag too.

Sophiatown Police spokesperson Warrant Officer T J De Bruyn said, “We can confirm that the suspect was being chased by the community when he voluntarily jumped into the dam.”
WO De Bruyn added, “He was arrested and will be charged with theft.” He could not confirm allegations that the suspect confessed to the distribution of child pornography or his involvement in a pornography ring.
