Rea Vaya introduces new points system
AUCKLAND PARK – Rea Vaya passengers will now travel at ease.
From 1 May Rea Vaya passengers will be able to earn up to 25 per cent bonus points when buying points for R51 or more.
The City of Joburg unveiled the new points system for the purchasing of Bus Rapid Transport fares on 29 April at one of the bus stations in Auckland Park.
The City’s Department of Transport also introduced vending machines which will be used by passengers to load their points.
Director of communications from the City’s Transport Department, Benny Makgokga, said the vending machine would ensure passengers travel at ease. They (passengers) will use their debit or credits cards to load fares into their travelling smart cards.
“In this way, we are reducing the queues at the stations. Passengers will now have two options to load their points. It is either to use the vending machine or to queue at the cashiers,” he said.

He further explained the system was aimed at benefiting the passengers and ensures they travel conveniently. “This issue of paying for travelling fares is one of the complaints from our passengers and now it is resolved,” he explained.
The MMC for Transport, Councillor Christine Walters, indicated that the department was delighted with the system which would address many of the fare collection concerns raised by passengers.
“Our aim is to ensure that public transport in the City is fast, safe, reliable and affordable. The new Rea Vaya points system and vending machines will make travelling easy and hassle free while offering customers real savings,” she said.
