Kindness falls like confetti, 11 340 times

LINDEN – Kindness Like Confetti does another huge sanitary towel collection for deserving girls.

Kindness Like Confetti (KLC), made another huge collection of sanitary pads.

The charity organisation managed to collect 11 340 pads, 14 235 tampons and 284 boxes of pantyliners for Caring4Girls.

After their successful sanitary pad collection in March, KLC embarked on another drive in May to coincide with Menstrual Hygiene Day on 28 May.

“A total of 22 boxes were loaded and delivered to the Caring4Girls programme on 3 June,” said KLC founder Alyson Samson.

Imbumba Foundation founder, Richard Mabaso, whose foundation runs the programme congratulated Samson, who he said is a dear friend of the foundation, for the huge collection in support of the #KeepingtheGirlChildinSchool campaign. “This is an amazing achievement and such effort simply reminds us that anyone in their individual capacity can get involved and inspire more people to get involved in changing our young girls’ lives,” said Mabaso.

Samson, explained that Imbumba foundation is based in Kwa-Zulu Natal. “Caring4Girls is a sanitary towel distribution programme which aims to keep young girls in school during their monthly cycles,” expressed Samson. She also said that programme focuses on creating awareness around puberty, adolescence and in the process aims to demystify all menstrual-related myths.

She also said that research revealed that most poor girls may miss up to 50 days of schooling annually due to the lack of access to adequate sanitary protection. “There are 2.1 million young girls between the ages of 12 and 18 years that are living below the poverty line in South Africa who have to resort to using old clothes, rags, newspapers, leaves, bark and grass because they cannot afford sanitary towels,” said Samson.

KLC will have an ongoing campaign collecting sanitary products, but will have another major drive in August, for Women’s month. “We really need to highlight the plight of young girls, especially those in rural areas,” said Samson. She concluded that she will join the Caring4Girls team for the distribution of the pads in the township of Etwatwa in the East Rand (Ekurhuleni).
