Linden residents and business owners met former businessman and DA’s City of Joburg’s mayoral candidate, Herman Mashaba, who addressed several issues affecting residents.
Mashaba spoke to residents about unemployment and its effect on the economy. “The biggest challenge facing the youth is unemployment, which affects 60 percent of the youth and 65 percent of that figure is black youth,” Mashaba said.
“Many of our youths turn to substance abuse when faced with the inability to find a job,” he explained. He pointed out that the government was tasked with job creation, a mandate which they have been unable to fulfil. “I am here to meet Linden residents and to encourage them to go out in their numbers to vote. Every single eligible voter must go out and vote, which is the only way we will create a change,” he added.
Mashaba explained that the City should be serving the residents and the first step is to employ professional and qualified people to run the metro. He noted the aging infrastructure that needed to be upgraded, the 118 informal settlements found in Joburg that were to a large extent ignored by the ruling party and the need for small business. “I am from a small-business background and that is what we need more of in order to drive our economy further,” he said.
