The pupils of Crossroads School left the audience enchanted when the school recently held its biennial school concert over the course of three evenings.
Robinhood and his Brus was a South African-inspired adaptation of the story of Robin Hood, which was written by the school’s Grade 1 teacher, Lynne van den Berg. The play incorporated the entire school in various ways.
Carolyn West, one of the school’s teachers, said the children practised very hard. “During the second term they learned their songs, dance moves and lines in order to produce a worthy piece of lyrical theatre, which was as much enjoyed by the audience as it was by the children,” she said.
She added that the staff all came together to make props and costumes and also choreographed parts of the play that often involved having 30 or more cast members on stage at once. “Not an easy task at all. It was a labour of love producing this exceptional play and staff and pupils had to juggle school work, therapies, and the school play during this time,” said West.
Principal characters were chosen through voluntary auditions of Grade 6 and 7 pupils and the cast proved to be stars worthy of the stage. “Among the main characters was Maid Marion, played by Bonngoe Pokane, Andrew Shiller in the role of Robin Hood and King Johannes, played by Luke Underhill,” said West. She congratulated pupils and staff for producing such a fantastic performance and thanked the audience for their positive support.
