Two murder suspects busted

SOPHIATOWN – Weeks later suspects for murder and attempted murder are arrested.

With the increase in shootings the Sophiatown Police have been dealing with in the last couple of weeks, they finally made a breakthrough and arrested two suspects in connection with two separate incidents.

On 26 August, the Johannesburg Crime Intelligence unit (JCI) followed up on information regarding a murder that occurred on 31 July at the corner of Pollack Avenue and Hamilton Street in Newclare, where the victim, Junaid Mohamed, was stabbed to death after a car accident.

Sophiatown Police corporate communications officer, Lieutenant Colonel Julia Claassen said a witness provided the police with information that led them to a house in Montclare, where they arrested a 27-year-old suspect.

In the second case, Claassen said the unit followed up on more information regarding the suspect in an attempted murder case that took place on 27 August. “The suspect was apparently arguing with the complainant; the suspect then left, returned with a firearm and allegedly opened fire on the victim,” said Claassen.

She said the bullet hit the first victim in the arm and a second victim in the upper body. Both victims were taken to hospital for medical treatment.

On 28 August, the unit followed up on information that led them to a house in Newclare. On arrival, they arrested a 24-year-old suspect who was identified by the witnesses. The two suspects have been charged with murder and attempted murder, respectively.

“The Sophiatown police applaud the community for their assistance in providing tangible information to ensure the arrest of these suspects,” concluded Claassen.
