Warm welcome at Westdene Recreation Centre

The Westdene Recreation Centre is one of the cornerstone facilities in the community that offers various exciting activities and is also used as a venue for various functions.
The centre is also home to the Sunbeam Crèche.
The centre’s facility manager, Monica van Jaarsveld has been involved at the centre in various roles for the past 27 years and enjoys being involved in community-based projects that bring the community together.

“There are about eight groups who use the centre’s facilities, excluding people who book it for private functions.

The tennis group is the most popular group and the drama academy is run by popular and professional actors.

“At the moment I’m still in the process of deciding which groups will join us next year and I think it would be great if we could build another hall. We can’t always accommodate everyone’s groups with just two halls.”
Van Jaarsveld added that she enjoys working with the community and always makes an effort to find out what the community needs in order to cater for them. A number of communities approach her to accommodate their groups and there are a number of ‘arty’ members who join the groups because the centre is based next to Melville which is considered an artistic hub.
The centre’s administration assistant, Lebohang Mabe said that the facility also caters for community members who want to host private functions such as weddings or braais. Community members are required to book in advanced.
