10 arrested during Sophiatown drug bust

SOPHIATOWN – R80 000 worth of drugs taken off the streets by Sophiatown Police.

Ten suspects have been arrested by Sophiatown police after crack cocaine worth R800 000 was discovered during a high-density operation conducted by the Johannesburg flying squad, K9 unit and Sophiatown police reservists.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Julia Claassen of the Sophiatown Police Station, during the operation police received a tip-off from a resident who told them about a drug den at Umfolozi flats at Waterval, Sophiatown on 5 December.

Upon arrival, they searched the flat and recovered a locked money box containing more than R21 000 in cash, mandrax tablets, crystal meth, crack cocaine and six cellphones.

The suspects aged between 26 and 50 years were arrested and charged with dealing in drugs and drug trafficking.

They will appear in Newlands Magistrate’s Court on 7 December. Sophiatown police management applauded the community for their assistance in providing this information.
