River’s operation costs run deep

NORTHCLIFF – 'I couldn't put him down' – owner.

River, a Northcliff dog who recently dislocated his hip, is recovering from his operation while his foster owner is scrambling around for money to pay the bill.

Jade Malynn, his foster owner, took River in when he needed a home and ever since, the bond between the two grew stronger and stronger.

River, a playful dog, got injured while doing what dogs do best – playing. He was in Malynn’s garden on 16 July when he jumped over a fence and got his back leg stuck.

After being freed, Malynn realised something was not right and later it was discovered that River’s hip had been dislocated. As a result, he had to have an operation to saw his hip ball joint off.

“Because it’s a specialist op, it is costing R12 000,” she said. However, later it was agreed by the vet that R2 000 would be taken off the operation, leaving the outstanding amount at R10 000. Although the operation was a success, River popped a few stitches and had to be taken back to the vet to treat the infected cut.

“He’s pretty miserable because his sisters are allowed to play outside and he’s cooped up inside… It’s a six-week recovery so he’s got a long way to go,” Malynn said.

She is now looking for ways to pay for the operation and has since taken to Facebook where she has been asking for help and suggestions. “I couldn’t put him down, he’s a healthy, beautiful dog that is very special to me but I just don’t have that kind of money,” she explained.

Husky Rescue South Africa got wind of her plight and is trying to do what they can to help.

A few weeks ago, the Northcliff Melville Times published an article about an elderly woman whose car had been stolen, and people from far and wide opened up their hearts to help through a crowd-funding project.
