Empowering women during Women’s month
AUCKLAND PARK – Women gathered for a Women's Month discussion by a panel of dynamic women.
Women’s Month is an opportunity to celebrate and acknowledge what it means to be a woman in all her roles.
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) hosted a women’s talk at The Country Club Johannesburg.
The Women’s Day celebration, in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, was well attended by women from all walks of life to celebrate each other. The programme director Muzi Matheba was a contributing factor in bringing the ostentatious occasion to life. An open discussion featured TV and radio personality Sam Cowen, United Nations ambassador and singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka, actress and singer Mara Louw, media personality and author Bonang Matheba and businesswoman Maya Makanjee.

University of Johannesburg principal Professor Ihron Rensburg during his opening address, welcomed everyone in attendance and spoke about the importance of the empowerment of women. “Our institution is a perfect place to become a place where we can and must demonstrate best practice. So I continue to hope and pray that the conversations we have empower women and also encourage women to continue on this journey of transforming our university,’ said Rensburg.

The occasion included a three-course meal that guests enjoyed in between the programme. The panellists had the opportunity to introduce themselves and their biographies on the shelves. The theme of the talk was ‘Be grounded in your own self’, and the influential women also spoke about how to take your destiny into your own hands.
Cowen was the first to open the discussion about the contents of her book From Whiskey to Water; which documents her journey as a recovering alcoholic. She spoke about her early years when her alcoholism was at its peak and how she overcame that period in her life.

Matheba launched her book on 3 August at Diamond Walk in Sandton. She said her book From A to B: Invest in your Sparkle documents the trials and tribulations of being a young, black African girl who is trying to find her way.
Some of the previous speakers included Graça Machel, Mamphela Ramphele, Brigalia Bam, The Mia Brothers, Alison Botha, Siba Mtongana and Dr Michael Mol.
